Exploring the Rich and Vibrant Culture of Cartagena
For my first ever solo trip I chose Cartagena, Colombia. I was inspired by various solo & group travel photos and reviews. I love a historic city and the tropical setting was definitely a plus for me. I booked my stay through Expedia and stayed at charming Hotel Casa Lola Deluxe Gallery in the Getsemani neighborhood, steps away from the historic Walled City. This beautiful boutique hotel, is a beautiful blend of traditional architecture with modern touches. I fell in love with the indoor water features, lush vegetation and the indoor-outdoor aesthetic. I was greeted warmly in the beautifully appointed parlor check-in area and shown to my room. I loved the rich warms tones of the decor and the draped canopy bed, it definitely embodied the South American/Caribbean vibe.
After a quick change, I couldn't wait to explore the vibrant area! It was bustling with tourists and locals, creating an exciting atmosphere. The hotel is conveniently located near a pedestrian plaza filled with fantastic amenities - from restaurants and bars to coffee shops, pharmacies, and even a money exchange. I instantly felt a sense of belonging there. I ended my evening back at my hotel for dinner at the onsite restaurant, Dona Lola. I was treated to a lovely early birthday serenade from the entire waitstaff after I mentioned why I was visiting to my server, Elian. It was the perfect finisher to an amazing day.
For my birthday I booked myself a Historic Walking Tour through AirBnb Experiences, it covered the Walled City, a UNESCO designated historic site, and the artistic neighborhood of Getsemani. My tour guide, Isaac, treated me to a private tour of the Walled City, where I learned about the Spanish commander, Pedro de Heredia, who founded the city of Cartagena de Indias, and how it became an important trading port.
One of the most iconic sights in Cartagena are the Palanqueras, these vibrantly dressed women carrying baskets of fresh fruit. These incredibly resourceful and innovative women hail from the historic town of Palenque. It stands today as a testament to resilience, being the very first free Black community in the Americas. Founded by the courageous escaped slave Benko Bioho, the town served as a sanctuary for runaway slaves. Bioho fearlessly led expeditions to Cartagena, liberating enslaved individuals and guiding them to safety in Palenque. Today, this community thrives as a remarkable destination to explore.
Later that evening I indulged in yet other Airbnb experience, the Bahia Party & Nightlife Experience! Our group met at Muelle de los Pegasos for a relaxing sunset cruise. I met twins who were also celebrating their birthday, as well as solo travelers from the USA and Mexico. Our cruise was an absolute blast, filled with lots of shenanigans and drinking games. After our time on the water, we headed back to the dock and headed a short walk over to dinner at San Nicolas Restaurant Bar. The food and service were top-notch, and if you’re celebrating a birthday you receive a sash and crown, and the entire restaurant will serenade you in a heartwarming celebration!
For the final leg of the evening we headed to Monkey Bar, a bar/lounge in the Walled City. Let me just sat that I knew that I was home when I heard Afrobeats playing. The other members of my tour group hit and I the dance floor along with our host Daniela. We had a blast, and my new friends were kind enough to walk me back to my hotel after my #UBERfail.
*Fair warning, the streets within the Walled City are very narrow and gets very congested late night so rideshares are almost impossible to secure, something to consider if you're out late.
For day three I decided on a relaxing day at PA'UE(pronounced pah-way) Beach Club. This private beach club, on Isla Grande island was perfect for a stress-free and relaxing day, just white sand beaches and crystal-clear turquoise waters. The adventure begins with an early pick-up at Muelle de la Bodeguita, just outside the Walled City, followed by a 45-minute speedboat ride to the island, where you’re greeted with a welcome glass of champagne. HiCartagena Tours did an amazing job, from start to finish everything was well organized. I did the optional tour of the Rosario Islands, where I saw the homes of superstars like Shakira and the legendary Pablo Emilio Escobar Gaviria. This was followed by lunch back at the beach club and enjoyed the next few hours soaking up the sun, sand and quiet.
Notable mention is the Castillo de San Felipe de Barajas. I booked this tour on a whim while in Cartagena. This spectacular fortress was built in 1536 and is located on the hill of San Lazaro. The fort overlooks the city of Cartagena and was a strategic location as it overlooked all approaches to the city by sea or land! I thoroughly enjoyed the tour of the maze of tunnels under the fort where my guide told us in great detail how any invaders where caught unaware in the pitch black tunnels!

Make sure to check out the Walled City for it's awesome nightlife. Calle del Colegio street is where you find popular spots like Alquimico, which was voted the top restaurant/bar in Cartagena. This place has some fantastic mixologists, so I'm definitely looking forward to going back for more of their cocktails!
Monkey Bar was a delightful discovery! As soon as I stepped in, the vibrant tunes of Afrobeats welcomed me, instantly making me feel right at home. The DJ skillfully blended Hip-Hop and Caribbean music, it was definitely a vibe.
If you're looking to chill out after a lazy day and enjoy some great views with a tasty Mojito, Mirador Gastro Baris the spot for you! The live music sets the perfect tone for a relaxing evening out. Located right behind the Clock Tower, it's the perfect place to unwind.
The Getesami neighborhood and the Walled City have an endless array of bars, clubs, and restaurants. As I strolled by numerous vibrant spots, I couldn't help but wish for more time during my trip to fully explore them all.
Cartagena, is a blend of culture and history. From the vibrant nightlife to the artistic charm of Getsemani neighborhood, this city on the Caribbean coast offers a perfect escape. The best time to visit is during the dry season from Jan-April, when temperatures hover pleasantly in the high 80s.
